Accreditations
In our desire to provide the highest quality of care, York Hospital seeks accreditations from many professional organizations and academic associations. The following accreditations represent a partial list of achievements for the various services York Hospital provides and they acknowledge that we are following the best recommended practices in the heath care industry.
Imaging Services
York Hospital’s imaging services are accredited in many areas by the respected American College of Radiology. This stature indicates we have voluntarily gone through a rigorous review process to be sure services meet nationally accepted standards; that our staff are well qualified, through education and certification, to perform and interpret your medical images and administer your radiation therapy treatments; and that our equipment is appropriate for the test or treatment you receive, and the facility meets or exceeds quality assurance and safety guidelines. We are accredited by the American College of Radiology in the following modalities:
- Breast Imaging Center of Excellence: York Hospital’s Breast Care Center is designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence because we demonstrate excellence in breast imaging by successfully achieving accreditation in Mammography, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, Breast Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy.
- York Hospital CT Scan (Computed Tomography): York Hospital’s CT Scan services in York and Wells are both accredited by the American College of Radiology. We have also successfully achieved accreditation in CT for pediatric imaging.
- York Hospital PET Scan: York Hospital’s PETT Scan services in York is accredited by the American College of Radiology
- Ultrasound: We are accredited by the American College of Radiology for general, gynecologic and obstetric ultrasound services.
Cancer Care/Medical Oncology
York Hospital Oncology Treatment Center: The cancer program at York Hospital has been granted approval by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. The Approvals Program sets standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to make sure they conform to those standards. Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and a review of its performance. In order to maintain approval, facilities with an approved cancer program must undergo an on site review every three years. In 2008, the Commission lauded York Hospital as an Outstanding Achievement Award Winner.
Cardiopulmonary Care
- York Hospital Nuclear Cardiology is accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine for myocardial perfusion imaging (Cardiac Nuclear Imaging, Nuclear Stress Testing).
- York Hospital Cardiology is accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories for Adult Transthoracic (Echo), Adult Transesophageal (TEE) and Adult Stress (ie, Stress Echo); and is also accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories in Extracranial Cerebrovascular Testing (carotid ultrasound), Peripheral Venous Testing (duplex venous ultrasound testing for DVT), and Peripheral Arterial Testing (testing for PAD).
- York Hospital Diabetes Education has a Certificate of Recognition from the American Diabetes Association’s Education Recognition Program (ERP), which assesses whether applicants meet the national standards for Diabetes Self Management Education.
Laboratory Services
- York Hospital’s high complexity laboratory locations in York (at York Hospital), Wells (at York Hospital in Wells) and South Berwick (at South Berwick Medical Services) are all accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and are certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). In addition, our laboratory stations at York Hospital in Kittery and York Oncology are CLIA certified.
- The goal of the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is to improve the quality of clinical laboratory services through voluntary participation, professional peer review, education and compliance with established performance standards. Upon successful completion of the inspection process, the laboratory is awarded CAP accreditation and becomes part of an exclusive group of only 6,000 laboratories worldwide that have met the highest standards of excellence.
Family Care
York Hospital’s Birthing Service is designated a Baby Friendly Hospital by the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for lactation. We are one of only 86 hospitals and birth centers in the United States with this distinction.
